In Memoriam: PETER HALSTEN THORKELSON (1942-2019)
Mood:  sad
Topic: Say hi to David for us...
And then, there were two...

The 2010's haven't been particularly kind to The Monkees or their horde of teeming fans (including this one).

Especially in the month of February!

If you recall, it was on an Unpleasant Valley February day back in 2012 (on Leap Day, in fact) that a massive coronary claimed the life of 66 year-old David Thomas Jones, the youngest and lone Britisher of the TV cast/group. Now, 7 years hence, we mourn the loss of Peter Halsten Tork (nee Thorkelson), the eldest series regular/band member, over a week after his 77th birthday...and unfortunately coinciding with the 86th birthday of Monkees creator/producer/executive producer/writer/director Robert Rafelson.

The last Monkee to be chosen, Tork was the only other Monkee to appear in all 58 TV episodes and direct one (aside from Micky Dolenz). He bowed out of the group in late 1968, shortly after videotaping the special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, but would later on return with 2 of his former mates (and occasionally 3!) for a plethora of reunion tours, 4 new albums, and a 1997 reunion special for ABC, Hey Hey It's The Monkees.

Many of you also know that Peter tackled a knockdown, dragout battle with a rare tongue cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, only to have it recur with a vengeance and precipitate his passing, thus casting yet another Monkee wrench into the machinations. With half the original roster gone, The Monkees now share the same boat with the surviving members of the very band which inspired them, The Beatles (also reduced to a duet due to the cancer-induced death of one of theirs). But the mayhem and the melodies he leaves behind inevitably live on...

Thanks for helping us one and all to love one another, Peter. And say hi to David for us...

PETER HALSTEN THORKELSON

First MF&TVV Update For 2019

Welcome to another year for The Monkees Film & TV Vault: The Year Of Our Lord 2019 AD! The 50th anniversary of the lone NBC telecast of The Monkees' grand finale as a quartet: the TV special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, and the start of The Monkees TV series Saturday Afternoon run on CBS!

Picking up where we left off last fall, Episode No. 34, "The Picture Frame" (a.k.a. "The Bank Robbery") (prod. #4759, aired on NBC September 18, 1967, April 1 and September 9, 1968) is The Featured Monkees Episode Of The Week.

Today's MF&TVV Updates (the first in a while!)

Weeeee're baa-aaack! After a 2-month delay! My used laptop croaked due to old age in October. Hope your Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas was grand!

Lotsa catching up to do: first off, the Halloween page has been changed to the New Year's page. Next, this week's Featured Monkees Episode is No. 47, "The Monkees Christmas Show" (prod. #4746, aired on NBC December 25, 1967), in honor of The Big Day yesterday! Final Draft script dates have been added to the episode capsules for "It's A Nice Place To Visit..." (a.k.a. "The Monkees In Mexico") and "The Monkees Race Again" (a.k.a. "And Leave The Driving To Us").

Finally, the scan of that grainy, dark, unflattering photocopy I made of the 1967-68 NBC "Monday Night's The Night" ad which has resided as part of The Monkees Second Season Episode Index for many years has been been retired and replaced with a bright, clean color scan. Biggest thanks go to Tom Beiter of the Garage Sale Finds blog for contributing the scan!

Today's MF&TVV Update
In observance of 52 Revolutions Per Monkee this Wednesday, this week's Featured Monkees Episode is, appropriately, the very first, the Emmy-winning “The Royal Flush” (prod. #4701, aired on NBC September 12, 1966 and May 8, 1967).

First MF&TVV Update For September 2018

The Featured Monkees Episode Of The Week is No. 34, "The Picture Frame" (a.k.a. "The Bank Robbery") (prod. #4759, aired on NBC September 18, 1967, April 1 and September 9, 1968), 50 decades after its third and final broadcast on NBC, and the (true) final NBC television networkcast of The Monkees altogether.

And that's it! The 50th anniversary of all 58 installments of The Monkees in its entire 2-season broadcast span on NBC (save one)---first-run and repeat---have been observed! This site will for the first time in 2 years revert to chronologically featuring episodes alternating seasons, and will once again be featured on Monkee Monday, after many years on Pleasant Valley Sunday, in advance of the 52nd anniversary of the show's World Premiere next Wednesday.
